I hereby Certify,

1st, That the above leave was granted to commence on the 23rd of April, 1859, and end on the 2nd of October, 1860, on the ground of ill health, and that Medical Certificates were produced, of which copies are annexed.

2d, That The Honorable John Walter Hulme, Esquire, has served the Crown for Fifteen years, two months, and 18 Days.

3d, That in the course of that Service he has been absent on leave on several occasions, at the dates and for the terms specified below, viz:

In the year 1845. For 24 Days, beginning on the 2nd and ending on the 25th October.

1847-48. For 3 months and 16 Days, beginning on the 30 December 1847, and ending on the 16 June, 1848, vide Lord Grey's Despatch N° 13 of 20th March 1848.

1852-53. for 11 months and 13 days, beginning on the 25th February, 1852, and ending on the 12 February 1853.

1854-55. For 11 months and 21 days, beginning on the 12 April, 1854, and ending on the 1 April, 1855.

4th, That provision has been made for the due execution of The Honorable John Walter Hulme, Esquire's, Office during his absence by the appointment of The Honorable W. M. Green, Acting Attorney General, when Bowring was Governor.

NOTE.-Officers who may be under the necessity of applying to the Secretary of State for an extension of their leave of absence, are requested to annex this document to their applications; and in order to meet this contingency, it will be furnished to them in duplicate.

We the undersigned, Medical Attendants to the Honorable The Chief Justice Hulme, do hereby certify that the Chief Justice has, ever since his return to the Colony in April 1855, suffered more or less from the skin disease from which he was in 1853 obliged to leave Hongkong.

In the Spring of 1857 he had a severe attack of Dysentery and he has since then suffered several times from Diarrhea and Indigestion and his general health has been so much impaired by the climate that we do not consider it would be safe for him to remain here another Summer and would recommend that he should at once return to England for the restoration...
